Learn to row
Most SSBC members had never stepped into a boat before joining. There's no membership fee, and everyone is welcome to give it a go.
Novice rowing
SSBC uses Michaelmas term to train novices to row or cox. You'll be in a novice crew, taught from the very first stroke, and racing by the end of term.
Novice races include:
- Queens' Ergs, an indoor rowing competition
- Emma Sprints, a 500m side-by-side race
- The Fairbairn Cup, an endurance head race at the end of term
After that, senior crews race in the Lent and May Bumps, among the most exciting races on the Cam.
Coxing
Every crew needs a cox to steer, call the race and run the outing. No experience is needed: coxes are trained from scratch in Michaelmas just like rowers.
Already rowed?
If you've rowed or coxed before, get in touch to find out about the senior crews you can get involved in.
