Captain’s Welcome

SSBC Committee 2023-24

Rowing in Cambridge is not just a sport – it’s a massive part of the culture. Therefore, SSBC is more than a sports club, it’s a community which can honeslty feel like a family. The Boat Club is Sidney’s oldest and largest society, with students across all subjects and years.

Our season starts in Michaelmas Term with a fresh intake of novices and new members to the club. Within 8 weeks, novices who have never stepped in a boat before will be competent rowers taking part in events such as Queens Ergs, Emma Sprints and at the end of the term, the Fairbairn cup, a rite of passage for all novices.

Lent Term brings the opportunity to row as a senior, and race in the amazing Lent Bumps. SSBC have been venturing off-Cam as well, to events like HoRR and WeHoRR on the Thames.

Easter Term brings the beautiful Cambridge weather to the Cam, and rowing becomes an excellent hobby to keep you fit and healthy through what can be an exam-heavy term. Easter ends with May Bumps, the 4 days of racing that keeps rowing on the Cam famous

However SSBC isn’t all about the rowing! Whether it’s crew meals, games nights, alumni dinners, the SSBC garden party or of course our termly Boat Club Dinner, SSBC hosts myriad different social events to help make the Boat Club the community that it is.
